Farley: Misguided Criminal Justice Reforms Put Our Community At Risk

TUXEDO, NY - Chele Chiavacci Farley, candidate for Congress (NY-18) released the following statement regarding the tragic death of Rosie Osai:

"The tragic death of Rosie Osai on Christmas Eve, and the subsequent release of the illegal alien charged with her death, once again underscores the misguided decision made by Democrats in the State Legislature to eliminate cash bail for dozens of serious crimes.

"From the beginning, district attorneys, law enforcement and local elected officials have repeatedly called for Governor Cuomo and the State Legislature to delay the effective date of this new law to make the changes necessary to protect the public’s safety. Unbelievably, the state’s legislative leaders failed to engage those responsible for implementing these changes, before they acted.

"In the last few months, there have been multiple incidents in the Hudson Valley highlighting the dangerous consequences of this new law, which was supported by Congressman Sean Patrick Maloney and voted for by every Democrat representing our region in the State Senate. Now, the illegal immigrant who has admitted to committing a felony in connection with this young mother’s death was released on his own recognizance, thanks to this new misguided legislation.

"Local district attorneys and judges are entrusted by voters to keep our communities safe. With the new state legislative session beginning next week, Governor Cuomo and the legislative leadership must listen to law enforcement and immediately act to prevent others charged with felonies and other serious offenses from being freely released back into our communities."
