West Point, NY is home to one of America’s greatest treasures – the United States Military Academy. For all of us who make the Hudson Valley home, we can be proud that we are neighbors with some of the bravest people in the country. On Saturday, almost 1,000 of these brave soldiers, from the most diverse group ever, successfully graduated.
They now embark on the next phase of their lives as officers in the United States Army. They do so with pride. Their path to graduation was more challenging and their journey ahead is filled with greater danger than most of us. I congratulate each of them on their accomplishment, thank them for their service, and pray for their safety. Protecting our freedoms comes at a price.
We often hear the phrase “freedom isn’t free”. But we rarely take a moment and reflect on what that really means. Memorial Day was set aside as one day every year for Americans to pause from our daily lives and honor those who sacrificed. I thank each of them for their service.
Today, families and friends will join together to celebrate the lives of our brave departed soldiers. I hope you have an enjoyable and safe Memorial Day.
