Today we come together as Americans to celebrate freedom. With controversies over the meaning of the American flag as a symbol and some media outlets telling us that America is just okay, it may seem our future is in doubt. But we can be confident that we live in the greatest, most prosperous country in the world, because of the ideals and principles our founding fathers declared 243 years ago.
In Philadelphia on July 4, 1776, 56 brave men from thirteen colonies signed the document Thomas Jefferson spent the night writing. They bravely declared our independence and charted a journey whose outcome was far from certain. They stood in unity for the belief that all men are created equal with certain unalienable rights including life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness.
The Hudson Valley quickly became the central focus of the revolutionary war because control of the Hudson River was strategically vital to success. Our region has a steep history in our fight for independence, but none more historic than Jonathan Hasbrouck’s farmhouse in Newburgh, NY. This home served as General George Washington’s headquarters and was the location where he announced America’s battle for independence and freedom had been won!
While some may question our greatness, the wisdom, courage and bravery our founding fathers displayed that day have stood the test of time. Let’s celebrate their wisdom and our freedoms.
Happy birthday America!
